Hey there,
I hope your last week was filled with moments of peace and clarity.
If not, today's topic might be just what you need: the stillness equation.
Life often feels like a race, doesn’t it?
We hold on to jam-packed schedules like trophies.
Wear exhaustion like a badge of honor.
And convince ourselves that being busy is what it means to live a meaningful life.
But what if we’ve got it all backward? What if the answers we’re so desperately chasing aren’t hiding in doing more, but in doing less?
This is the paradox of stillness.
The less we do, the more we see.
The more we see, the clearer life becomes.
The clearer life becomes, the more we understand what truly matters.
When you slow your body, your mind naturally follows. And the noise that clouds your vision begins to settle.
This quiet space isn’t just empty. It’s full of answers waiting for you to notice them.
Too much movement can be a problem.
Picture a jar of muddy water.
If you keep shaking it, the water stays murky, right? But set it down for a while, and the sediment starts to sink. The water becomes clear. Our minds work the same way. Constant doing, striving, and rushing act like that endless shaking. It’s no wonder we often feel stuck, overwhelmed, and unsure of what truly matters.
Here’s the thing about busyness most people don’t realize: It feels productive, even when it’s not.
Checking tasks off a list can give you a sense of accomplishment, but are those tasks leading you anywhere meaningful? Or are you stuck in a cycle of motion for the sake of motion?
When you stop and slow down, that’s when priorities naturally rise to the surface. Ironically, doing less helps you accomplish more. At least the things that actually count.
Stillness is essential in a restless world.
Stillness is not the same as doing nothing. It’s not laziness. It’s intentional. Think of it like hitting pause on a movie. You’re not abandoning the story. You’re just giving yourself a second to absorb what’s happening.
Take this example:
Imagine you’re lost in a dense forest, and the harder you walk, the more confused you feel. Sweating, exhausted, and panicked, you keep pushing forward, hoping each step will get you out. But guess what? The more you move without clarity, the more lost you become.
Now imagine you stop, take a breath, and climb a tree to get a better view. From up there, you see the path you’ve been missing.
Slowing down is like climbing that tree. It allows you to gather your thoughts, reflect on your direction, and see things from a vantage point you can’t access while rushing.
There's magic in slowing down your body.
What happens when you physically slow down? The results can be surprising.
Here’s an everyday example: Eating. When you shovel food into your mouth while answering emails or scrolling your phone, you might finish a meal without tasting a single bite. But if you slow down and savor each mouthful, it’s a completely different experience. You taste flavors you didn’t notice before. You feel satisfied, not stuffed.
And this principle applies to everything, from your work to your relationships. A slower pace helps you engage with what’s right in front of you. It invites depth and richness into moments that might otherwise blur past unnoticed.
The mind follows the body.
Slowing your body also impacts how your mind works. Even small pauses, like focusing on your breath for 30 seconds, can calm mental clutter and reduce stress. It’s as if the mind takes its cue from the body.
When your movements are frantic, your thoughts race.
But when you sit still, your mind feels permission to pause, too.
This mental stillness creates space for clarity.
You begin to see what truly matters and, just as importantly, what doesn’t.
Decisions feel less daunting. Obstacles don’t seem as overwhelming. You may suddenly recognize that the source of your stress isn’t the deadlines at work but your fear of disappointing others. Or that the argument with your partner isn’t really about the dishes but about needing to feel seen.
The stillness equation can look different for everyone.
Maybe it's looking for pause points during your day.
Maybe it's taking a few deep breaths in the morning before starting your day.
Maybe it's incorporating mindfulness practices, such as meditation or Qi Gong.
The important thing is to find what works for you and make time for it regularly.
It may feel like a small change, but incorporating stillness into your life can have a big impact on your overall well-being and relationships.
There's freedom in doing less
There’s a kind of freedom that comes with stepping back and allowing life to unfold without forcing it. When you stop trying to control every outcome, you align with the natural flow of events. This doesn’t mean being passive. It means being present.
When you slow down, you’ll notice things you missed before.
The way your child smiles at you.
The warmth of sunlight on your skin.
Or the insight hiding inside a challenging situation.
Life becomes less about productivity and more about presence.
Doing less doesn’t mean you accomplish less. It means you focus your energy on what truly matters. And when you do, you’ll find that what you were searching for was there all along, waiting for you to slow down and see it.
Stillness isn’t the absence of effort. It’s the presence of intention.
When you practice the stillness equation, you’ll discover that sometimes the greatest progress happens not when you’re running. But when you’re standing still.
