The uncarved block – how staying natural and unrefined reveals our true strength
Perfection is overrated—your raw, unpolished self is where the magic lives
Hey there,
I hope this week finds both you and your cup refreshingly empty.
Today, I wanted to share with you a concept that has been on my mind lately: the uncarved block.
Have you ever heard of this term before? It's a concept from Daoist philosophy. It refers to the idea that our true strength lies in staying natural and true to ourselves.
Think about a block of wood – when it's left in its natural state, it's strong and sturdy. But when we try to carve it into something else, we may weaken or distort its original form. This same concept can be applied to ourselves as individuals.
In today's society, there is immense pressure to always strive for more, be better, look perfect. We are bombarded with images and messages of what success should look like and how we should present ourselves. As a result, many of us feel the need to constantly mold ourselves into something else.
Whether it's the perfect body. The perfect job. Or the perfect lifestyle.
But in doing so, we may lose touch with our true selves.
We may overlook our unique strengths and talents in pursuit of what society tells us is valuable.
So, what if we took a step back and embraced our uncarved block?
What if we allowed ourselves to be unrefined and unapologetically natural?
What if we recognised that our true strength lies in our authentic selves, not in conforming to societal standards?
It can be a scary thought – letting go of the need for perfection and embracing who we truly are.
But it can also be incredibly freeing.
Because when we embrace our natural state, we tap into our authentic power. We can recognise and appreciate our strengths without trying to fit into someone else's mold. And this allows us to find joy and fulfillment in simply being ourselves.
Of course, embracing our uncarved block is an ongoing journey.
It involves a deep level of introspection and self-discovery. It means being honest with ourselves and recognising where we may have been trying to fit into someone else's idea of perfection. And it also means acknowledging and celebrating our unique qualities, even if they don't align with society's standards.
But in my experience, it's worth it.
This concept can help you appreciate your own natural state more. And you'll learn to embrace your quirks and imperfections, knowing that they're what make you who you are.
So, next time you feel pressure to conform or try to mold yourself into something else, remember the uncarved block.
Because your raw, unpolished self is where the magic lives.
